Salt Lake Regional Medical Center

Mental Health

At Salt Lake Regional Medical Center, we believe that healthcare doesn’t start and end with the body. Comprehensive healthcare includes treatment for the body and the mind. For adults age 55 and older, the physical, mental, and environmental changes that accompany this stage of life can be difficult to process and manage. That’s why we’ve established a special 20-bed unit within the hospital, dedicated to the practice of geropsychiatry, an area of medicine jointly focused on the physical and emotional needs of older adults.

Depression is one of the most common reasons why patients seek treatment in our Senior Behavioral Health unit. This mental illness affects approximately 6.5 million Americans over the age of 65 – almost one in five seniors.

Why seek mental health treatment? Below are a few of the symptoms and conditions assessed and treated in our facilities:

  • Anxiety: Obsessive thoughts; difficulty coping in stressful situations; feelings of restlessness, panic, or impending doom.
  • Chronic Pain: Uncontrolled, continuous pain; use of multiple pain medications.
  • Cognitive Changes: Significant memory loss; impaired judgment and insight; acute deterioration of coping skills and judgment, which sometimes put others at risk; inability to perform daily, routine functions.
  • Dementia: Behavioral changes associated with this diagnosis, including aggression and refusing medications.
  • Depression: Loss of interest in activities once enjoyed; inability to accept or adjust to loss; feelings of worthlessness, hopelessness, or guilt; change in sleep patterns and energy.
  • Mood Disorders: Severe mood swings; sudden onset of severe depression; feelings of intense excitement and energy, accompanied by a lack of sleep.
  • Paranoia: Combative or violent behavior; accusing others of unrealistic negative behaviors.
  • Phobias: Fears that inhibit normal functioning.
  • Psychosis: Seeing, smelling, feeling, or hearing non-existent things.
  • Suicidal or Homicidal Feelings: Thoughts of harm and/or death for the self and/or others.
  • Difficulty sleeping, nightmares.
